Associations Between Acticities of Daily Living and Depression and Anxiety in Stroke Patients

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to provide information regardin interrelation-influences and the level of acticities of daily living, anxiety and depression in streoke patients.

Methods: A total of 99 stroke patients from 5 university hospitals and 1 rehabilitation center based in Gyeonggi Province and Seoul wans enrolled in this study. Data was collected over two months. The Modifieds Barthel Index (MBI; activities of daily living), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were performed.

Results: The mean MBI, BDI and BAI scores were 71.47¡¾28.52, 20.0¡¾9.95 and 4.4¡¾9.91 respectively. Significant negative correlations between ADL and anxiety and between ADL and depression, and a significant positive correlation between depression and anciety were found. Those respondents living with their families showed a negative correlation between ADL and anxiety. There were negarive correlations between educational level and depression and between ADL and depression.

Conclusions: The levels of depression and anxiety are negatively correlated with their ADL levels. Therefore, physical rehabilitation preogram may be mecessary for stroke patients to prevent or reduce depression and anxiety, and so help increase motication and quality of life
